When you want to list the top three Nigerian dishes, pounded yam will surely be on the list whether you are from the Northern, Southern or Eastern part of Nigeria. Nigeria is a country that has many cultures, languages and tribes but one of the many food that unites us is pounded yam. The unique taste and texture of this food is known for bringing so many people together across the world.
However, there is variation in the way each tribe prepare the food but one thing remain constant, which is the yam must be pounded in a mortar with a pestle until it becomes smooth and consumed with the soup of choice. Speaking about soup that perfectly goes with pounded yam, we have the popular egusi soup, ogbono soup and vegetable soup.
Just like every other meal, pounded yam can be prepared in the home for the family but more importantly it is more enjoyable when it is served at Nigerian 'Owanbe' parties such as birthday, Wedding etc. Undoubtedly, there is something special about Nigerian party meals and a plate of hot pounded yam with sumptuous soups isn't an exception.
Pounded yam is prepared using mortar and pestle but nowadays there are modern ways of preparing it with a yam pounder. If you haven't mastered the art of pounding well it may seem as a difficult task for you to get that smooth texture that is devoid of lumps. Apart from that the stress of lifting the pestle up and down may also be a daunting task for some people.
How to prepare
It is quite easy to prepare but require some techniques. Start by peeling the yam using a knife
Cut the yam into small pieces so that it can cook quickly and wash thoroughly.
Place the yam in a pot and add enough water to cook it. Allow it to cook until they are soft.
Now, the pounding process can begin once the yam is soft. Begin to take the boiled yam and drop them into the mortar one after the other and pound using the pestle. Continue the pounding process until they become smooth and somewhat stretchy. Add some hot water to losen it up incase it is too hard. In short, pound it to the texture you desire.
Serve the pounded yam using a spatula or your hand into your desired shape into the plate and add your soup.
