En la Urbanización El Bosque de la Ciudad de Caracas se encuentra ubicada una de las tantas sedes de Asia Gourmet Market, una tienda especializada en la venta de productos asiáticos desde pastas, especias, bebidas hasta incluso golosinas. Llevaba mucho tiempo queriendo visitar este supermecado para adquirir algunos que otros productos que llamaran mi atención y fue finalmente el Viernes pasado que logré cumplir con mi objetivo.
Con la emoción a tope y el traductor activo en mi teléfono inteligente, estuve largo rato paseándome entre los anaqueles viendo los diferentes productos comestibles que habían en el supermercado. La primera ronda fue una de reconocimiento para tener un idea de qué se me antojaba probar en el momento, mientras que en la segunda ronda de recorrido me tomé el tiempo de elegir los productos que probaría. Esto suena como si no me hubiese costado demasiado elegir, pero lo cierto es que tuve varios momentos de indecisión...¡me provocaba comprar el supermercado entero!
In the Urbanization El Bosque in the city of Caracas is located one of the many branches of Asia Gourmet Market, a store specializing in the sale of Asian products from pastas, spices, beverages and even candy. I had been wanting to visit this supermarket for a long time to buy some products that caught my attention and it was finally last Friday that I achieved my goal.
With excitement running high and the translator active on my smart phone, I spent a long time wandering around the shelves looking at the different groceries in the supermarket. The first round was one of reconnaissance to get an idea of what I was craving to try at the moment, while on the second round of browsing I took the time to choose the products I would try. This sounds like I didn't have too much trouble choosing, but the truth is that I had several moments of indecision...it made me want to buy the whole supermarket!
Una de las cosas que me moría por probar desde hace tiempo era el Soju, una bebida destilada tradicional de Corea que es elaborada base de granos de cereales. Pero a pesar de que se encontraba en mi lista de cosas probar quise dejarla para otra oportunidad, una más especial quizás. Lo primero que tomé del anaquel en la sección de bebidas fue una leche de soya sabor a chocolate y no es porque nunca antes hubiese probado la leche de soya, ¡claro que lo he hecho! pero para ser sincera, visualmente me había llamado la atención los diversos colores de las cajitas de cartón que eran indicativos de la variedad de sabores a escoger. Entre las opciones destacaban la leche de soya saborizada con vainilla, coco, fresa y chocolate. Elegí este último sabor porque digamos que siempre es la opción predilecta y la que nunca falla...y, en efecto, no falló. Cuando le di el primer sorbo a la leche de soya achocolatada fue algo así como un alivio para el alma e instantáneamente viajé en el tiempo a aquellos momentos en donde mi abuela incluía en mi lonchera del colegio las bebidas de cajas de cuartito. Definitivamente, le doy un 10/10 a esta leche de soya.

El segundo artículo que fue a parar a mi cesta de compra fue un paquete de 400 gramos de macarrones de arroz. Cuando comencé a cuidarme más con mi alimentación descubrí este tipo de macarrones, pero resultaban ser un poco costosos en la tiendita donde solía realizar mis compras saludables. Aprovechando que en el supermercado asiático el paquetito de 400 gramos tenía un costo aceptable, no dudé en adquirirlo. Ya luego les contaré qué tal me va con los macarrones a base de arroz. ¿Tercer artículo? ¡algo dulce, obviamente! En el área de cometibles dulces habían cosas extrañas y no tan extrañas. Una de las tantas cosas no tan extrañas que llamaron mi atención porque me daba la impresión de que podía ser un gran hallazgo, fue un paquete de galletas de almendras. Su costo era de $8 y de verdad me vi tentada a comprarlas, pero como iba un poco reducida de presupuesto estas galletitas pasaron a la lista de "cosas por comprar en una próxima ocasión".
One of the things I had been dying to try for a long time was Soju, a traditional Korean distilled beverage made from cereal grains. But even though it was on my list of things to try I wanted to save it for another opportunity, a more special one perhaps. The first thing I grabbed from the shelf in the beverage section was a chocolate flavored soy milk and it's not because I had never tried soy milk before, of course I have! But to be honest, I was visually struck by the different colors of the cartons that were indicative of the variety of flavors to choose from. Among the options were soy milk flavored with vanilla, coconut, strawberry and chocolate. I chose this last flavor because let's say it is always the favorite option and the one that never fails...and, indeed, it did not fail. When I took the first sip of the chocolate soy milk it was something like a relief for the soul and I instantly traveled back in time to those moments when my grandmother included in my school lunchbox the quart box drinks. I definitely give this soy milk a 10/10.
The second item that ended up in my shopping cart was a 400 gram package of rice macaroni. When I started to take more care of my diet, I discovered this type of macaroni, but it turned out to be a bit expensive in the little store where I used to do my healthy shopping. Taking advantage of the fact that in the Asian supermarket the 400 grams package had an acceptable cost, I did not hesitate to buy it. I'll tell you later how I do with the rice-based macaroni. Third item? something sweet, obviously! In the sweet eatables area there were strange and not so strange things. One of the many not so strange things that caught my eye because it gave me the impression that it could be a great find, was a package of almond cookies. They cost $8 and I was really tempted to buy them, but since I was on a bit of a budget these cookies went on the list of "things to buy next time".

Casi cuando ya me retiraba algo decepcionada de esta área porque no encontraba algo que realmente quisiera probar, se atravesó en mi camino un paquetito de caramelos surtidos. En ese momento recordé que hace tiempo en un restaurante de comida china nos regalaron un caramelo sabor a guayaba que me gustó bastante, así que posiblemente los caramelos de esta bolsa pondían resultar una buena opción y por ello los terminé seleccionado. En efecto, mi intuición no falló, y esta terminó siendo una buena compra. El paquetito constaba de unos 12 caramelos en total con sabores y texturas muy particulares, la mayoría de ellos eran lo suficientemente compactos como para terminar perdiendo un diente si se te ocurría morderlo, otros tenían una textura más crocante y sólo uno resultó ser una goma extraña que se quedaba pegada a tus dientes si intentabas masticarla. La variedad de sabores fue lo que más me agradó, encontrándome con caramelos compactos sabor a: litchi, leche, coco e incluso melón. Mis favoritos fueron los dos que resultaron ser crocantes y que estaban elaborados a base de maní y almendras, los sabores de frutos secos eran bastante potentes y eso fue lo que más me agradó. El cubo gomoso que les comentaba fue el primero en llamar mi atención porque vino en una cajita bastante adorable sellada con un precinto de seguridad en forma de mariposa ¡muy aesthetic de su parte! la cuestión es que cuando lo probé no detecté cuál era su sabor, pero según el traductor de google contenía pulpa de fruta (¿cuál fruta? no lo sé). Esta bolsa de caramelos surtidos tenía un costo de $1,20 que sentí fueron la mejor inversión de todas junto a la leche de soya. Si regreso al supermercado en un futuro próximo no dudaría en comprar de nuevo estos caramelos de la fortuna.
Just as I was leaving this area a bit disappointed because I could not find anything I really wanted to try, a small package of assorted candies crossed my path. At that moment I remembered that some time ago in a Chinese food restaurant they gave us a guava-flavored candy that I liked a lot, so possibly the candies in this bag could be a good option and that's why I ended up selecting them. Indeed, my intuition did not fail, and this ended up being a good buy. The little package consisted of about 12 candies in total with very particular flavors and textures, most of them were compact enough to end up losing a tooth if you happened to bite into them, others had a crunchier texture and only one turned out to be a strange gum that stuck to your teeth if you tried to chew it. The variety of flavors was what pleased me the most, finding myself with compact candies flavored with: litchi, milk, coconut and even melon. My favorites were the two that turned out to be crunchy and were made from peanuts and almonds, the nutty flavors were quite potent and that was what pleased me the most. The gummy cube I was telling you about was the first one to catch my attention because it came in an adorable little box sealed with a butterfly seal very aesthetic on their part! the thing is that when I tasted it I didn't detect what the flavor was, but according to google translator it contained fruit pulp (which fruit? I don't know). This bag of assorted candy cost $1.20 which I felt was the best investment of all next to the soy milk. If I go back to the grocery store in the near future I would not hesitate to buy these fortune candies again.
Algo que incluí en la compra porque no podía faltar fue una galleta de la fortuna. No es que me guste demasiado el sabor de este tipo de galletas, porque en su mayoría suelen tener un sabor a cartón que no es de mi total agrado, pero lo divertido de ellas es la frase que el destino te regala. La frase de mi galleta de la fortuna fue: "sonríe a los demás, la honestidad y la amistad te traerán fortuna"...debo admitir que quedé como el emoji "meh". El último producto que agregué a mi cesta fueron unos fideos instantáneos, en esta sección del supermercado me demoré un rato porque habían muchas opciones para escoger y cambié más de dos veces de opinión. En primera instancia, había seleccionado unos Kimchi Noodles para preparar en casa con calma, pero mi acompañante del día sugirió comprar los instantáneos que venían en recipiente. Esto vino a raíz de que nos percatamos de en el supermercado podía calentarse agua para preparar el ramen en el momento y sentarse tranquilamente a degustarlo.

No miento cuando les digo que habían muchas opciones, así que terminamos seleccionado uno que llamó nuestra atención por diversos factores, pero luego de unos cuantos minutos nos daríamos cuenta de que cometimos el peor error de nuestras vidas. Toda la compra estuvo bien hasta que llegamos a este producto, pero esta historia sobre lo que salió mal en mis compras de productos asiáticos lo dejaré para otra publicación porque tiene mucha tela por cortar.
Something I included in the purchase because I couldn't miss it was a fortune cookie. It's not that I like the taste of this kind of cookies, because most of them usually have a cardboard flavor that is not to my liking, but the fun of them is the phrase that fate gives you. The phrase of my fortune cookie was: "smile to others, honesty and friendship will bring you fortune"...I must admit that I looked like the emoji "meh". The last product I added to my basket was some instant noodles, in this section of the supermarket I took a while because there were many options to choose from and I changed my mind more than twice. In the first instance, I had selected some Kimchi Noodles to prepare at home at ease, but my companion of the day suggested buying the instant ones that came in a container. This was because we realized that in the supermarket you could heat water to prepare the ramen on the spot and sit quietly to enjoy it.
I'm not lying when I tell you that there were many options, so we ended up selecting one that caught our attention for several reasons, but after a few minutes we would realize that we made the worst mistake of our lives. The whole purchase was fine until we got to this product, but this story about what went wrong with my Asian purchases I'll leave for another post because it has a lot of ground to cover.

En líneas generales, la experiencia comprando productos asiáticos en Asia Gourmet Market fue bastante divertida. El lugar es agradable, porque además en la zona exterior puedes sentarte con tranquilidad a tener tu Momento Foodie Asiático. El supermercado tiene un anexo, estilo restaurante, en donde se encuentra la parte de pastelería y panadería, pero en esta oportunidad no recorrimos esa área. Mi intención es regresar pronto y probar algunos de los platillos como los Mochis y el Bao que me llaman la atención. Ya veremos en qué momento tengo la oportunidad, ¡les estaré contando!
Overall, the experience shopping for Asian products at Asia Gourmet Market was quite enjoyable. The place is nice, because you can sit outside and have your Asian Foodie Moment. The supermarket has an annex, restaurant style, where the pastry and bakery part is located, but this time we didn't go through that area. My intention is to return soon and try some of the dishes like Mochis and Bao that catch my eye. We'll see when I have the opportunity, I'll be telling you about it!
