Can't Be Bothered Making Crusty Sourdough? Try This Instead

in Foodies Bee Hivelast year

I went through a big sourdough phase. I was good at it. Then I just couldn't justify spending the time on it, and the variable temperatures in my house in winter meant I couldn't get it to rise with any consistancy.

But bread is so expensive. Sourdough is nearly 10 bucks a loaf and cheap bread isn't nice. Then my son found this recipe, and yesterday I finally gave it a go.

Trust me. You wanna try this one.

Aint that a sexy loaf?

I mean LOOK at it. Doesn't it look impressive? Look at that crust. Look at those bubbles. This is a GREAT loaf of bread, and Jamie agrees it also passes the vegemite toast test.

Seriously, that's a damn good loaf of bread!

I'm not going to replicate the recipe here - just go check out the recipe on Recipe Tin Eats. I love her recipes - the complicated ones, or the ones you might be a little unsure of the steps, are accompanied by a video. Check it out here - it goes for a minute and basically runs down the whole easy process. And yes, it is THAT easy!

I had a quick conversation with Chat GTP to work out the costings. I can buy 5 kg of bread flour at the shop for $12. Blah blah blah workings out = around 90 cents per loaf.

If I say a reasonable priced sourdough is 8 dollars, then that's a savings of about 7 dollars. I can get about 12 - 13 loaves out of a bag, so that's a cost of .90 cents each! Say whhhaaaattt!!

With Love,

Haha, it's true that making your own bread has many advantages, as do many other things for that matter.

As someone who takes bread very seriously (after all, it's ingrained in my French heritage), I have to say that your bread looks amazing. I'm writing down the recipe.

I think happiness lies in mastering simple things:

  • Knowing how to build things yourself, like a house or a garden.
  • Knowing how to bake bread.
  • Knowing how to fish.

These are the basics of survival. The other things seem more superficial to me. To be perfectly honest, I don't know how to do any of these things yet.

I agree! I read this comment this morning and on the way back from a surf I was thinking about this. I'd swap out fishing (because it's boring, haha, and it's so overfished these days) for foraging for wild seasonal foods and maybe trapping rabbits or something if push came to shove. Plus a good knowlede of herbalism!

Thus, in sum:

  • Knowing how to build things like a shelter or a vegetable garden
  • Knowing what wild foods to eat or that are medicine
  • Knowing how to hunt/fish if push came to shove
  • Knowing how to bake bread and preserve food ie pickles and ferments
  • Knowing how to harvest honey!

I completely agree, and as far as fishing and hunting are concerned, it's absolutely essential that they're used when necessary.

I don't know much about it, but I think there's something to be said for regulation. Given that we've killed the main animals that were dangerous for us, the latter can no longer hunt those lower down the food chain. So we have to do it.

But that's as far as I'd go, because I don't really know anything about it. Anyway, I agree with all your points and I think that's what we need to concentrate on for a happy life.

Sourdough breads are great! We prefer them to the regular dough ones. It is a bit tricky, but it works like magic!

If you'd read my post, you'd know it WAS NOT a sourdough.

Your bread looks amazing.

I read your post, of course! We make our sourdough at home. We don’t buy it and it is very easy to make your sourdough. The flour for one bread costs roughly $0,5 and that’s all!

I'm about halfway through making wild yeast, day three currently. This is I don't know which attempt, all the previous ones failed for I don't know what reason maybe it's the temperature, but it's fascinating to me how trendy sourdough has become - perhaps a bit overwhelming.

Holly holy bread :D

I think it was a very similar recipe to this that got me started on bread making.

Sometimes I still make it but wet a hand and fold it over a few times in that bowl. Surprising the difference it makes!

It's so much cheaper too isn't it? And the wet dough really seems to make a difference, yes
.

Totally cheap. Totally tasty. The biz!

Wow. That was a very quick and easy recipe right there. Just three ingredients.
I'll try this out soon.

Oh yes do let me know how it turns out!

That looks delicious ! I really love good bread.

I can hear the crrrrrrrunch sound from here

Oh so crunchy!

That looks really good, might try it out

Let me know how it goes! It's super easy!

Damn! That was easy to make, I left it to proof overnight in the fridge. The most difficult part was shifting it nicely over to the parchment paper, it got a tad messy, but it turned out nice and rustic.

yeahh it looks really attractive;)) a tasty photo!:)

do it!

It most generally is cheaper to make it than buy it in regards to food.

very helpful thanks
