TacoCat's TrEats #212: Enjoying Classic Singaporean Breakfast

Hey Hive!

Sorry it's been a while since I shared a food post but somehow things kept coming up and messing with my schedule. Anyway, we're back to with more restaurantours!

This was from December 2024, when Sean and I went on a staycation at Hilton Singapore along the famous Orchard Road (which is full of luxury shopping). We were lucky enough to get a free night there and were initially thinking of using it while overseas but it'd be very cumbersome to move around so we figured we'd just use it here at home. Besides, when else would we get to stay in a 5-star hotel in Singapore?

I'll do a full post about the day as part of my travel series some other time, but for now I just want to share some of the restaurants we visited while in town!

Last time we visited Sean's favourite Thai restaurant and it was amazing! He went there with his colleagues a few times and was excited for me to try it. We had a truly delicious meal.

We were checking out the next day since we only had one night in the hotel. But first, it was time for breakfast!

Since we were in town there weren't many cheap breakfast places around, and didn't want to go to the mall. So we braved the heat and headed to an iconic place for some classic Singaporean-style breakfast - Killiney Kopitiam!

This brand is very well-known, with their main competitor being Ya Kun Kaya Toast. But they also have many branches across Singapore and overseas as well! Apparently this very outlet is the one that started it all, and has been operating at this very place since 1919!

The interior looks very classic with the wooden stools for seating and wall fans. The while tiles reminded me of school to be honest. It felt like we were transported back in time, but thankfully the place is very clean.

The menu is pretty simple as well, so simple that they didn't even have physical menus. They were just pasted on the walls with pictures.

image.png

But it was good enough, and all the dishes looked really good after a walk in the hot sun. Anyway we were familiar with these dishes of course.

They also had a more detailed menu with drinks on the other side of the wall.

I eat quite light for breakfast so we chose a few dishes to share. We were careful not to over-order this time, especially since I wasn't even sure how much it was since the menu didn't list prices.

While waiting for our food to arrive, we noticed the walls were also adorned with some corny jokes between husbands and wives. They weren't offensive but we did find it quite odd; maybe that's the style of this place?

image.png

Our soft-boiled eggs were the first to arrive. So we cracked them in a bowl they provided. The classic way to eat it is with some pepper and soy sauce.

image.png

Mix it all up and you're good to start eating! Some people would buy plain toast or kaya toast and dip it in the eggs as well.

We also bought some iced milk tea to cool ourselves off.

The next item to arrive was the kaya butter toast! I don't normally eat kaya since the one I tried when I was younger was especially sweet and it turned me off since then. But I curious to try it this time and I'm glad I did! It was delicious and not too sweet, sandwiched between two slices of bread that was crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside.

image.png

Granted, it wasn't as thick of a toast as I would've liked but it was still good. Although I would've preferred if the butter was more evenly spread with the kaya instead of a cold slab. But then again, that is the classic way of making kaya toast so it's understandable.

Our last dish was mee rebus, which is a Malay dish featuring yellow noodles coated in a thick, flavorful sweet potato gravy. It's also a popular breakfast dish although and although I don't normally enjoy it since I find it a little heavy and sweet for breakfast, Sean likes it so we decided to try it.

The gravy was actually lighter than I thought it was going to be though so it wasn't too bad. Honestly it complemented the salty soft boiled eggs quite well. It was flavourful and delicious, and was just right for me portion-wise since we shared it.

image.png

Altogether it definitely would've been a very filling breakfast but I think it was just right. It was a little pricey for the portion size though but I guess it's to be expected for being in town. I think the total price was about 15 bucks?

All in all it was a very satisfying breakfast and we enjoyed a nice break being tourists in our own country for once.

If you ever visit Singapore, you have to try a classic breakfast like this! Even thought Killiney is a chain they definitely still stick to the classics so it's worth recommending for sure.
