Homemade Apple Turnovers | Quick and delicious!

A quick but very tasty snack!

Not too long ago, I baked an apple crumble pie for the first time.

Meaning, I literally had just bought the spring cake tin and used it for the first time. Honestly, I had no idea how much filling would be needed and I tried being on the safe side with the apple count to make sure I wouldn't find out that I was short on apple filling while prepping the pie. While I had the bowl with sliced apples, I already noticed that I probably had too much of them, but I was prepared to use the extra filling later as I bought puff pastry when I bought the apple crumble pie ingredients.

What do you need for these simple but tasteful apple turnovers?

I can't say exactly how much you would need to include as I used the leftover filling from the apple crumble pie, but I can take a guess and you can also start adding the ingredients carefully to see if it's to your liking or it needs a bit more.

The prepping will probably not take you more than 10 minutes and to bake them about 15 minutes. A quick but lovely snack!

I made 4 apple turnovers and this is (about) what I used for the filling:

4 parts of puff pastry
1 to 1.5 sweet apples
half a teaspoons of cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon gingerbread spices
a tablespoon of sugar
half a tablespoon of custard powder
a beaten egg

The prepping

This is easy and can be done by anyone, even if you aren't a chef (lol). Turn on the oven at 200 degrees Celcius. Take the parts of puff pastry out of the freezer so while you cut the apples, they are defrosted. Start cutting the apples into thin slices or (if you prefer) small cubes. Make a mix of the spices and test if you think the combination is nice (if not add a bit to your liking). Add the sugar and custard powder as well and now make sure the apples are all covered with the mix.

Divide the apples over the puff pasty parts, but only use one half of them and make sure you have an edge to close the pastry without touching the filling. Otherwise, your apple filling will come out during the baking process. Now use a brush to cover the edge of the pastry with the beaten egg and close it by pressing the edges together.

Ready to bake!

Cover the baking tray with a baking sheet and place the apple turnovers on the tray. For a nice color, you can now brush the beaten egg on top of every turnover and if your oven is hot enough you can now place them into the oven for 15 minutes. Not every oven is the same, so please check how they look at 15 minutes, they may need to be in the oven for a few minutes longer in some cases, you will see if they look ready.


Once done, please let them cool off a bit, because the hot filling is a recipe for disaster if you eat them right away. Ouch! Once cooled off, you can add some whipped cream if you like, and enjoy your quick snack!
