Hi everyone, how are you today? Today is a super hot day in Surabaya. The national weather forecast has warned us that there will be no rain this week. For today's blog I just want to share my husband’s younger days. I hope you enjoy this essay. He shared this embarrassing moment with me a while ago. Back then, when he was around his twenties, he was so starving, with no pocket money left. Then he goes to his usual rice packer. This seller sells a small portion of rice packed with stir-fried tofu and beansprout, Bakwan; it is made of egg and mixed with flour and fried, glass noodle
and a little sambal. They sell two portions, small and medium. No big. I usually eat about 5 packs of small portions. I don’t know why it is so different to eat 5 small portions than 3 medium portions, because it is so addicting. The food is called “Sego Banting”. I don’t know why it is named that way. Sego means rice in Japanese, while banting means slam. So, basically is just a small portion of food, but many people love it. Maybe because the price is cheap. The small amount is less than 1 dollar. Around $0.19, while the medium size is $0.31. That’s why the queue is quite long, especially at midnight. They started selling it at 09.00 PM. Back to the topic, my husband and his 5 friends just had a few bucks left, so they started to buy Sego Banting. At first, they don’t have any intention of stealing the Bakwan, but seeing the boys in front of them makes them do it. Hahaha. The owner fried the Bakwan and then put it in front of their house. I forgot to tell you that they sell it at their house, and their house is in a small alley. They pack the rice and the condiments inside the house while frying the Bakwan outside. That made the stealing motive begin. The boys in front of my husband stole the bakwan and put it in two plastic bags and then flew away. Seeing that, my husband and his friends also try that method too. So they just pay for a few packs but get more than 3 plastic bags of bakwan. That trick were done by my husband and his friends every time they ran out of money. It seems that the owner knew it. But she just pretended to know nothing. Even though she got robbed many times, she managed to buy a new refrigerator, the newest model at that time, even many new electronic things. Many years passed, my husband finally got his job and he visited that store. The taste is still the same, and she still sells it in that house. He usually buys and adds more money and refuses to get the change. He then confesses to the seller that she saved him from starving when he ran out of money. She knew it. Hahaha. She also knew that many students do that. It was a heartwarming story. Do you ever have the same experience?
This is the photo of sego banting. See it's a simple dish but addicting
