Christmassy Pilar Square on Constitution Day | [Eng][Esp]

This weekend in Spain we have had a long holiday bridge, even today on Monday we are still on public festive day and the Christmas atmosphere is brimming in the streets.

Friday was also Constitution Day, when the Christmas lights of Zaragoza, lends its facilities to illuminate part of the city with the colors of the Spanish flag, as seen in this photo along the great Calle Alfonso.

Friday December 6th was one of those days when we all knew that if we went out to the streets, it was to expect a massive crowds in the most important tourist spots of the city, but also one of the few days when you can coincide with all the family and friends to take the little ones to enjoy the magic of Christmas in Zaragoza. And how we enjoyed! because I did not miss to accompany them in several of the attractions.

As soon as you entered the huge Plaza del Pilar it was easy to get lost in all the things to look at and do. The entire square was decorated and lit up in festive colors but what I found most beautiful was the huge ribbon of red lights decorating the town hall building as if it were a gift box. I loved it.

Este finde semana en España hemos tenido un puente bastante largo, aún hoy lunes estamos de festivos y el ambiente navideño rebosa en las calles.

El viernes además fue el día de la constitución, momento en el que el alumbrado navideño de Zaragoza, presta sus instalaciones para iluminar parte de la ciudad con los colores de la bandera española, tal como se ve en esta foto por todo lo largo de la grandiosa Calle Alfonso.

El viernes 6 de diciembre fue uno de esos días en que todos sabíamos que si salíamos a la calle, era para esperar una multitudinaria afluencia en los puntos turísticos mas importantes de la ciudad, pero también uno de los pocos días en que se puede coincidir con toda la familia y amigos para llevar a los más pequeños a disfrutar de la magia de la navidad enZaragoza. ¡Y vaya que disfrutamos! pues yo no me perdí de acompañarles en varias de las atracciones.

Nada más entrar en la enorme Plaza del Pilar era fácil perderse entre tanta con todas las cosas que hay para mirar y hacer. La plaza en toda su amplitud estaba decorada e iluminada con colores festivos pero lo que me pareció más bonito fue el enorme lazo de luces rojas que decora el edificio del ayuntamiento como si fuera una caja de regalo. Me encantó.

Belén Gigante

First of all, we decided to line up for the Giant Nativity Scene which is one of the main attractions of these dates. It is always very crowded and, although this year it was not necessary to book the entrance by hours as in other occasions, it has a schedule of 17:30-21h so it was better to get out of it early.

The queue was huge, almost going all the way around the structure, but the organizers who were attentive told us that it moved quickly and so it did, we were in a fluid line that was maintained until the exit of the Bethlehem and allowed us to see the whole assembly.

At the entrance you are greeted by scale replicas of the guards at the gates and you come across the water mill which I have always found to be one of the most beautiful things on display there.

As you move forward you come across many cute replicas of animals and whatever the day to day life of the people who lived and interacted in Bethlehem.

I remember that last year @palomap3, a native of the city and a better connoisseur of its customs than me, wrote in more detail about The Giant Bethlehem of the Plaza del Pilar an entry that I recommend to visit, to better understand this tradition.

Primero que todo, decidimos hacer la fila para el Belén Gigante que es uno de los atractivos principales de estas fechas. Siempre está muy concurrido y, aunque este año no era necesario reservar la entrada por horas como en otras ocasiones, tiene un horario de 17:30-21h así que mejor era salir de ello antes.

La cola era enorme, casi le daba la vuelta completa a la estructura, pero los organizadores que estaban atentos nos dijeron que se avanzaba rápido y así fue, estuvimos en una fila fluida que se mantuvo hasta la salida del Belén y nos permitió ver todo el montaje.

A la entrada te reciben unas replicaos a escalas de los guardias en las puertas y te encuentras con el molino de agua que siempre me ha parecido de las cosas más bonitas que se exhiben allí.

Al avanzar te encuentras con muchas replicas de animalazos muy simpáticos y de lo que fuese el día a día de las personas que interactuaban en Belén.

Recuerdo que el año pasado @palomap3, oriunda de la ciudad y mejor conocedora de sus costumbres que yo, escribió mas detalladamente sobre El Belén Gigante de la Plaza del Pilar una entrada que recomiendo visitar, para entender mejor esta tradición.

One thing I really like is the view of the Basilica del Pilar during the tour. The Nativity Scene is located right in the middle of the square, in front of the mosaic of the pillar that is illuminated with blue light and reflects the star of Bethlehem, so that the background of the tour gives a breathtaking view.

Among the most remarkable figures, besides the donkey that is at the entrance and that is very complicated to photograph because everyone wants a picture with him, the scene of the angel announcing the arrival of Jesus, who sometimes speaks as I remember but this time it was not so, the scene of the birth itself and the arrival of the three kings.

It is a very well worked representation, a bit creepy for those of us who do not like hyper expressive inanimate figures hahaha but it is the largest Bethlehem in Europe, so being passing through Zaragoza in December, it is something that is well worth seeing. The children get a little bored, because there are no things that move, the charm is more the scale replicas and its wonderful location.

Una cosa que me gusta mucho es la vista que se ve hacia la Basílica del Pilar durante el paseo. El Belén lo ubican justo en medio de la plaza, en todo el frente del mosaico del pilar que iluminan con luz azul y que refleja la estrella de Belén, por lo que hace que el fondo del recorrido regale unas vistas impresionantes.

Entre las figuras mas destacables, además del burrito que se encuentra a la entrada y que es complicadísimo de fotografiar porque todos quieren una foto con él, la escena del angel anunciando la llegada de Jesús, que a veces habla según recuerdo pero esta vez no fue así, la escena del propio nacimiento y la llegada de los tres reyes magos.

Es una representación muy bien trabajada, un poco tétrica para los que no nos gustan tanto las figuras inanimadas híper expresivas jajaja pero es el Belén mas grande de Europa, así que estando de paso en Diciembre por Zaragoza, es algo que vale mucho la pena ver. Los niños se aburren un poco, porque no hay cosas que se muevan, el encanto es mas las replicas a escala y su maravilloso emplazamiento.

Christmas craft and gastronomic exhibition

After standing in the long line to see the Nativity Scene, it was time to browse the Christmas fair stalls, as varied as possible. These bazaars are located on both sides of the Nativity Scene, at both ends of the square and consist not only of handicrafts and food for sale, but are also surrounded by various Christmas attractions in which children and adults can participate. Some are decorated with stork nests, which I always find amusing.

The first thing was to recharge energy, so without hesitation we did another line, the churro one, because you can't stand that cold without churros with chocolate. The old Churrería La Fama is usually in charge of the churros stand and it is a pleasure to enjoy them in this kind of events because they are some of the best in town.

The food stands are divided into those that offer preserves, sausages and cheeses to buy packaged and others tavern style, where you can sit down to eat and drink, of course these were totally crowded. This time we didn't plan to have dinner there, but to play with the little ones on the rides, so we didn't waste much time standing in endless lines to get more food.

Muestra navideña de artesanía y gastronomía

Luego de hacer la extensa fila para ver el Belén, era hora de curiosear los puestos de la feria navideña, tan variados como puede ser posible. Estos bazares se ubican a ambos lados del Belén, en los extremos de la plaza y constan no solo con venta de artesanía y gastronomía, sino que también están rodeados por varias atracciones navideñas en las que pueden participar niños y adultos. Algunos están decorados con nidos de cigüeñas que siempre me resultan divertidos.

Lo primero era recargar energías, así que sin dudarlo hicimos otra fila, la de los churros, porque no se puede aguantar ese frio sin churros con chocolate. La antigua Churrería La Fama suele ser la encargada del puesto de venta de churros y es un gusto poder disfrutarlos en este tipo de eventos porque son de los mejores que hay en la ciudad.

Los puestos de venta de comida se dividen en los que ofrecen conservas, embutidos y quesos para comprar empacados y otros estilo tavernas, en donde puedes sentarte a comer y beber, por supuesto estos estaban totalmente abarrotados. Esta vez no teníamos pensado cenar allí, sino jugar con los pequeños en las atracciones, así que no perdimos mucho tiempo haciendo filas interminables para conseguir más comida.

As for the attractions, it would be a lie to say that we did not have to spend a lot of time waiting in line to get on them, but the wait was worth it, many attractions sell tickets with the option to ride them more than once, so to make it worth the wait you could get three tokens per attraction and the little ones would not complain too much for enjoying it too little haha.

The price per ride varied, but in general one ride had a cost of 3,00 € and three rides could be purchased for 7,00 € an easy decision so you wouldn't have to spend more hahaha. Then there were some that offered 6 rides for 15,00 € it is clear that they know that children repeat endlessly.

There are also free activities that have different times each day, such as workshops or storytelling, several photocalls as the illuminated letters of ZGZ and then, there is the wishing tree, a huge and beautiful tree from which hang sheets of paper on which you can write your wishes for next year, it is one of the most beautiful things you can see there.

Noria ecológica

En cuanto a las atracciones, sería mentira decir que no tuvimos que invertir bastante tiempo haciendo las filas para subirnos en ellas, pero la espera valió la pena, muchas atracciones venden tickets con opción de montarlas más de una vez, así que para que valiera la pena la espera podías obtener tres fichas por atracción y que los pequeños no se quejaran mucho por disfrutarlo poco jaja.

El precio por atracción varía, pero en general una vuelta tenía un costo de 3,00 € y tres vueltas podrían adquirirse por 7,00 € una decisión fácil para que no te pesara gastar mas jajaja. Luego había alguna que ofrecía 6 viajes por 15,00 € está claro que saben que los niños repiten sin cesar.

También hay actividades gratuitas que tienen horarios diferentes cada día, como talleres o cuenta cuentos, varios fotocalls como las letras iluminadas de ZGZ y luego, está el árbol de los deseos, un enorme y hermoso árbol del que cuelgan hojitas de papel en las que puedes escribir tus deseos para el próximo año, es una de las cosas más bonitas que pueden verse allí.

Dreamland: Santa Claus' Village

In its own space is the Santa's Village, another very striking play area with a little train "Christmas Express", a candy palace with interactive games, Santa's house and a beautiful Venetian Ferris wheel.

This was the last thing we did and we only had missed the Santa Claus house, because it was already after 10 pm and everything was closing.

But we did go up to the rest and the truth is that entering the sweet palace is the most worthwhile for children, it has three floors where there are different moving plates on the floor, stairs and slides that are very fun, plus the Christmas decorations are very colorful and charming that change during the tour.

En su propio espacio se encuentra la Villa de Santa, otra zona de juegos muy llamativa que cuenta con un trenecito, un palacio de los dulces con juegos interactivos, la casita de Papa Noél y una hermosa Noria Veneciana.

Esto fue lo último que hicimos y solo nos faltó visitar la casa de Papá Noel, pues ya eran más de las 22h y todo estaba cerrando.

Pero si que subimos al resto y la verdad es que entrar en el palacio dulce es lo que más vale la pena para los niños, cuenta con tres plantas en donde hay diferentes placas móviles en el suelo, escaleras y toboganes que resultan muy divertidos, además que las decoraciones navideñas son muy coloridas y encantadores que cambian durante el recorrido.

The carousel is one of those things that I do not understand how people can stand, it is beautiful of course, but just trying to take pictures makes me dizzy, I skipped this attraction, but we had to wait a few laps until the kids were satisfied, it's funny how they do not get dizzy being there so long.

Of course, the details of the carousel and the dynamism of the pieces that also turned on themselves or went up and down, are impressive.

Another attraction that we did not get to enter, but that we had not contemplated either because it was so crowded, is the ice skating rink. A huge tent that is never missing in this Christmas fair and that, of course, is one of the most awaited by all. However, none of us are very skilled at it and the kids are still too young to go in by themselves.

There were so many people when we arrived that I decided to take a picture of the ice rink just before we left, because I think it is impressive that they make such a setup, plus the mountains of the Pyrenees in the background look beautiful.

Outside is a bank of two polar bears, perfect to take some pictures before saying goodbye to the visit and although it was after 22.30 there were still many people still walking around and taking pictures in the beautiful corners of the square and enjoying mulled wine in the taverns.

El carrusel es de esas cosas que no comprendo como la gente puede aguantar, es precioso claro que sí, pero tan solo intentar sacarle fotos hace que me maree, esta atracción me la salté, pero tuvimos que esperar unas cuantas vueltas hasta que los peques quedaran satisfechos, es curioso como no se marean estando allí tanto rato.

Eso sí, los detalles del carrusel y el dinamismo de las piezas que además giraban sobre si mismas o subían y bajaban, son impresionantes.

Otra atracción que no alcanzamos a entrar, pero que tampoco habíamos contemplado por lo repleta que estaba, es la pista de patinaje sobre hielo. Una enorme carpa que nunca falta en esta feria navideña y que, por supuesto, es de las más esperadas por todos. Sin embargo, ninguno de nosotros somos muy diestros en ello y los niños son aun muy pequeñitos para entrar solos.

Había tanta gente al llegar que decidí hacerle una foto a la pista de hielo justo antes de irnos, porque creo que no deja de ser impresionante que hagan tal montaje, además las montañas del Pirineo de fondo lucen preciosas.

Afuera está un banco de dos osos polares, perfecto para hacer algunas fotos antes de despedir la visita y aunque eran pasadas las 22.30 aun había mucha gente aun dando vueltas y haciéndose foto en los bonitos rincones de la plaza y disfrutando de vino caliente en las tavernas.
