Food food food. For what are we without food? At times I sit down and think hard about the essence of food in our lives. Yes, it might sound weird but I think it is a valid question in my opinion. Why do I have to nourish myself daily to stay alive?
Well, this should be a topic for another day. Let’s get to the real deal.
What are my food sources? Will I be wrong to say they cook and all I have to do is eat? lol. Enough of the jokes lol.
In the part of the country where I live currently, we don’t fancy the idea of having your source of food. This is due to a few factors which are mostly beyond our control.
First of all, in the northern part of Ghana, the only types of food we can farm are things that have to do with maize. Don’t get me wrong, other foods can be grown here but the probability of it turning out fine is low. Back in the Volta region, we had a huge farm where we farmed almost everything. From maize to plantain to cassava, to coco yam and a whole lot of stuff. We also had fruits on the farm.

The farm was not our major source of food but it played a big role in our food sources. This was because in that part of the Volta region the land was fertile hence it was cheaper and easier to farm just as a source of food. This brings me to my second point. Secondly, because of the type of land we have in this part of the country, it will be cheaper for you to buy from the market than trying to plant your source just to eat. If after investing a lot into making the garden work just using it as a source of food will end up hurting your pocket.
Regardless we do have a mini garden in and outside the house. That is not our mini garden but it belongs to my mom I should say. In this minimal garden, we have mainly plantain and banana. We have other plants like guava which is purely experimental and other relevant plants in the mini garden. Now we grow those types of plants because one it’s cheaper and two they don’t need a lot of attention and care before they grow. All they need is water often and you’re good to go.
So yh, in this part of the country we mostly deal with the finished product which is the processed part of the food but who wouldn’t like to farm his food? We would love to if that option is cheaper than buying the finished product from the market. How are things looking like for you in the part of the world where you are? Does your land allow you to plant a variety of foods? Or do you have to get the finished product from the market?
