Yam is among the staple foods in Nigeria, and there are so many ways to cook it.
But today in this post I'll share the recipe of fried yam and spicy curry sauce I made today.
There's something really comforting about fried yam, it's a simple and satisfying meal. So today I decided to make my crispy fried yam with rich spicy sauce accompanying it to the table.
I had yam I got as gift from a friend and I had craving for fried crunchy yam, which seemed like a perfect choice since I had the yam at home. I wanted to make something more than just plain fried yam with ketchup, so I decided to make the flavorful sauce to go with it and it seemed perfect since we have the curry leave planted in our little garden. So with a few more ingredients I got started.
Below are the ingredients I used:
Ingredients
- 1 medium sized tuber of yam
- 1 medium sized onions
- 4 fresh tomatoes (chopped)
- 4 cooking spoons of oil, for frying and for sauce
- 10 chili peppers
- Mixed curry and natural spices
- 1 small size Ginger, garlic and turmeric
- 1 handful Curry leaves
I start making this recipe by removing the yam peels and cutting it into desired shapes.

I chose to cut the yam in stripes as this is how I love my fried yam shape.
After cutting the yam and washing it, I set it aside.
Next I scrape the ginger, garlic and turmeric peel, chip the onions into smaller pieces then I blend them all with the chili pepper to make a pepper mix, and then I set it aside too
Next I salted the yam properly. Then I put the oil to heat and start frying them till it was all done and crispy
Next I reduced the oil to the desired amount I wanted for my sauce. I sautéed the pepper mix
Next I added the tomatoes to it and kept stirring it. And next was the curry mix natural spices and stirred properly
Then it was time to add the chopped curry leaves, I added it on top and after a few seconds I stirred it in properly into the sauce and it was done
The entire process for cooking this was about 45 minutes, from peeling the yam to serving the dish. The frying itself took the most time, but it was worth the wait so I enjoyed the process!
The crispy fried yam paired beautifully with the spicy sauce , really flavorful and satisfying and I loved every bit of it. This meal can be paired with any drink of your choice but I would choose Nigerian Coca-cola as the perfect match 🥰. I hope you like this and let me know if you'd be trying it too.
Thank you for your time here 🤗
