Passion fruit peel in a delicious drink [Eng-Esp]

When I was a child my mother surprised us the first time she prepared passion fruit shell juice, for my brothers and me it was like a delicious compote. A neighbor shared the recipe with her and she herself regretted having thrown away this part of the fruit so many times.

Yesterday I prepared some passion fruit shell juice and I was surprised that my aunt did not know about it, for her it was a surprise. The best of all is that she liked it very much because I added an ingredient that gave it the perfect touch for a more delicious flavor.

Cuando era niña mi madre nos sorprendió la primera vez que preparó jugo de concha de maracuyá, para mis hermanos y para mí era como una deliciosa compota. Una vecina le compartió la receta y ella misma lamentó haber botado tantas veces esta parte de la fruta.

Ayer preparé un poco de jugo de concha de maracuyá y me sorprendió que mi tía no supiera de esto, para ella fue una sorpresa. Lo mejor de todo es que le gustó mucho porque además le añadí un ingrediente que le dio el toque perfecto para un sabor más delicioso.

You can make a tasty juice with just the passion fruit shell, but in my case I find it much tastier combined with pineapple, it gives it a bit of natural sweetness, which can help to reduce the amount of refined sweetener, in case it is used. It also gives it its unique tropical flavor, a bit of sweet acidity.

A good combination worth sharing, so that's what I'm going for 😉.

Puedes hacer un jugo sabroso solo con la concha de la maracuyá, pero en mi caso me parece mucho más sabroso combinado con piña, le otorga un poco de dulzura natural, lo cual puede ayudar a disminuir la cantidad de endulzante refinado, en caso de que se use. Además le otorga su sabor tropical único, un poco de acidez dulce.

Una buena combinación que vale la pena compartir, así que a eso voy 😉

Ingredients for 2 small glasses:

  • Half a cooked passion fruit.
  • 1 glass of the passion fruit cooking water.
  • One pineapple wheel.
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar.

Ingredientes para 2 vasos pequeños:

  • La mitad de una maracuyá cocida.
  • 1 vaso del agua de cocción de la maracuyá.
  • Una rueda de piña.
  • 1 cucharada de azúcar.

Preparation // Preparación:

At the time of preparing this juice I had already cooked the shell of 2 passion fruit, I did it in about a liter of water. I had it reserved in the fridge and wanted to make just a little bit.

I think it is important to note that once the passion fruit is cooked, which is ready about 20 minutes after it starts to boil, let it cool and extract the pulp or fleshy part with the help of a spoon.

(Once a stubborn, very stubborn friend of mine made the juice with the whole shell and it turned out horribly bitter 🥴 So only the fleshy part should be used).

I blended the pineapple together with the passion fruit cooking water, strained to get a smooth texture.

Al momento de preparar este jugo ya había cocinado la concha de 2 maracuyás, lo hice en un litro de agua aproximadamente. Lo tenía reservado en la nevera y quise hacer solo un poco.

Creo que es importante señalar que una vez cocida la maracuyá, la cual está lista unos 20 minutos después de haber comenzado a hervir, se deja enfriar y se extrae la pulpa o la parte carnosa con la ayuda de una cuchara.

(Una vez una amiga terca, muy terca, hizo el jugo con la concha entera y resultó horriblemente amargo 🥴 Así que solo se debe usar la parte carnosa)

Licué la piña junto al agua de cocción de la maracuyá, colé para obtener una textura lisa.

Finally, I blended the strained pineapple juice with the cooked passion fruit and sugar.

Finalmente, licué el jugo de piña ya colado con la media maracuyá cocida y el azúcar.

After a couple of good blends the juice was ready to serve, thick, tempting and tasty.

Después de un par de buenas licuadas el jugo estuvo listo para servir, espesito, tentador y sabroso.
