The Garlic Bread Chef
I made garlic bread the other day. It brought back some awesome memories that got me looking through my address book to see if I could find some people.
When I was a student and lived in student accommodation with other students, we didn't have much money normally. We actually were all friends that decided to apply for the accommodation together, so we were in a kind of student house with 6 rooms. It was perfect; we lived like a family and pooled resources. Rather than each person buying their own stuff and fighting over fridge space, we contributed the same amount of money into a fund and bought groceries together. It was so efficient that, even though we were poor students, we lived the best life at the uni.
We would sometimes cook dinners for other friends who would come over to our house and make comments like "you guys are like a family", or "how do you guys afford all this stuff?". We even had a TV and VCR in our kitchen-lounge area and had "movie nights", since we also had a Blockbuster membership, with friends over, providing all the refreshments like popcorn and drinks, all on our student budgets. That's the power of communal living.
Sometimes when we didn't cook, or couldn't cook, or wouldn't cook, we would order takeaway. Again, it was much easier for us to grab family deals from Dominos Pizza back in those days, than each one buying their own. It saved us over 50% in cost. I remember I wasn't a big fan of pizza then so I'd just order garlic bread. I ate a lot of garlic bread in uni. Soon enough, others started doing that too and eventually we'd just order garlic bread with cheese instead of the pizza haha. It because a real thing, so much so, that our house stank of garlic. People called us the garlic house eventually 🤣
Soon enough we figured out how to make our own garlic bread. It wasn't as good as Domino Pizza's, but it was way cheaper. I started making mine with sliced baguettes and eventually moved to making the dough. It was a big hit with the housemates I remember. It became my specialty - I was the garlic bread chef 🙃
Peace & Love,
