What's Next For Me?

in Reflections8 days ago (edited)

People usually share their plans at the end of the year or on the first day of the New Year and call it New Year resolution. I hate the whole concept and I bet so many do for the same reason. I wonder how many are following through, how soon they are giving up and forgetting about it. I'll tell you, most are breaking their (health and lifestyle related) promises they make to themselves the very first minute of the year as that's when everyone drinks champagne (and what not) and serves festive dishes that exceed everyone's normal calorie intake three times at least, and we do this because we're celebrating. More about this later in this post.

As I said I'm late with my plan, 3 months late, because at the end of last year I didn't know what my schedule will be (I was in negotiation for a position) and it took some time till things got clear, so here I am with my solid plan for the year.

Last year I also had a plan and failed most of it. This year I have a more clear plan and don't intend to waste another year as the clock is ticking. We don't get any younger and the more time we waste, the less it remains to be lived as we want. Simple math, not rocket science.

Health above all else

This is something I've been concerned about and it's time to take it seriously. It's not like I'm sick (not that I know of), but I will be if I'm not taking this seriously, so here's the list of things I'm working on this year.

Fixing my sleep

Unfortunately my sleep has been all over the place, due to trading mostly. There are four trading sessions to choose from and the last one (for me) ends at 11pm my time and if I tend to trade it, it's midnight or even after midnight when I can fall asleep. After a trading session, you can't just turn your brain off and go to sleep, unless it was a boring session, but otherwise your mind is racing and you think of setups, chances and so on. So the new rule is to trade the beginning of the NY pm session, which starts at 8.30pm and trade for one hour and log off. In one hour you know if it worth sitting through the session or better do something else. This way my mind has time to cook down and can have a better sleep. This is important because my day has to start early and a good sleep is necessary if I want maximum efficiency.

After a thorough research I came to the conclusion that the best time for me to trade is the end of the Asia session, which means 7am. It matches my trading strategy perfectly and can be very profitable, but in order for me to have a razor sharp mind at 7am and be ready to hit buy or sell, I need to get up at 6am, as till 7am I need to finish my morning routine and be ready with my technical analysis as well. So to be able to have a laser sharp mind at 7am, I need a healthy sleep.

Tho weeks ago, with this crazy daylight savings shift I had to suffer a few days till I got things in order. It always messes with my sleep and the first week is always a struggle, but it's been two weeks now, so I've managed to get my sleep in order and looks like with my new strategy I can get 7 hours of sleep and rest too, because sleeping and resting is not always the same thing, unfortunately.

Change of habits
In order to go to bed earlier than my old usual, I had to give up watching movies aired by Italian broadcasters, which have been my favorites, for many reasons. Due to timezone differences, movies end close to 1am my time, which is way past my bedtime and just not acceptable anymore. Nothing comes without sacrifices, right? Instead, I switched to Netflix, where I can choose when to stop and resume next time. It still hurts as I love Italian movies, but it's been messing up my sleep really badly.

Diet

This is a huge piece of the package. The biggest piece of the puzzle if I can say that. The truth is, I've tried this and that, but had to realize the only way I can make some progress is by counting calories.

20250417_125009a.JPG

It's not something you want to do as it takes time to weigh everything, but it's a necessary evil, that not only helps you avoid over eating, but has also an educational role many can't see.

20250417_144127a.JPG

This was my lunch today, along with the vegetable soup you see above. This is chicken breast baked in the oven, without any added fat and served with cooked cabbage. It's a low calorie dish and not only light, but healthy too. The veggie soup also had chicken breast and was delicious. I'm not a huge fan of chicken breast but made in the oven makes it less dry and very enjoyable.

Having a strict diet is not easy and requires planning ahead. It requires shopping ahead as well. Leaving things to chance is not an option anymore.

20250413_184759a.JPG

It requires a different mindset and a lot of will, but it is totally doable.

What I observed about myself over the years is that for me it's better not to break the rules, which in plain English means no exceptions. Once you break the rules, other times follows and now comes what I said at the beginning of my post. You can always find an excuse why you break your own rules. Like there's an special event you can't skip or you are convinced you need to eat more because you're feeling weak or ... the list is long.

20250415_180514a.JPG

This is basically what alcoholics do. They are drinking when they are sad, or angry, or happy, or when they are celebrating something and they are basically always drinking, because there's always a reason. This is what I had been doing with coffee, till 7 years ago I said enough is enough and quit. This lesson taught me to never break the rule as once you break it, there's no turning back.

As I said, it's a tough task, but there's a good side as well. You learn a lot in the process and learn to select what can you eat and how much. Smartphones have built in health apps that come with a lot of options so you don't make many extra efforts. You can upload the ingredients, the foods you're consuming and you have the necessary details on the package as well, or on the internet. Easy peasy.

This is extremely important for the period that comes after, which maybe is more difficult than the diet, because once you're off, you think you can eat anything and everything and this is where most of us go wrong. I'm thinking after some time you can already estimate what a dinner or lunch means in terms of calories and maybe just have half, or a healthier option and avoid putting back what you lost.

It's been almost 3 weeks for me and I can solemnly swear, I've learnt a lot and made progress already.

20250417_181453a.JPG

Got a book with amazing recipes, it's a diet book for selective days, which means you have carb day, protein day, then fruit day and so on.

20250417_181536a.JPG

The book is good, has some amazing recipes for each category, it gives you the quantity for 2, but still, without counting calories, it doesn't work. At least for me.

20250417_181543a.JPG

So what I'm going to do (when I'll have enough time) is to calculate calories for each recipe and adjust the quantities in case I need to. I can still use it, but I need to see how much each recipe means in calories.

20250417_181556a.JPG

Will be great to have all the calories calculated and plenty of recipes to choose from.

Walk and exercise

This is something I need to work on still, work out when is the best time and find the time for a regular walk and exercise. I have a busy schedule and my day is heavily focused on trading sessions, so it needs to be between them.

New Chapter

This week I'm starting a new chapter of my life. There's something I've been wanting to do for years, but couldn't. Looks like this week my dream is going to come true. At this point I'm not going to reveal more about it as there will be a post dedicated to it, so stay tuned.

One Keyword Applies To All

I'm not going to let you play the guessing game, I'm revealing the keyword to you right at the beginning, which is:

DISCIPLINE

Trading requires a lot of discipline and those who can't be disciplined, are disciplined by the market. I've learnt a lot since I'm trading and have adjusted my lifestyle accordingly, but there's still a lot to learn and do. Healthy eating and a healthy sleep patter is required in this industry and both need discipline. So I guess it's safe to say without discipline, you have nothing.

It's time to finish my post as it's getting too long already. If you've managed to read it till the end (you're an idiot 😆) thank you from the bottom of my heart and I hope my plan motivates you as well in changing your life for the better.

I'm an idiot, ha, ha, and I'm glad I'm. Ever since I started reading, I've been doomed to become an idiot for being captivated. You speak frankly about your own experience, and of course, it is tempting to try to be inspired and wish I could do the same. I have attempted parts of your program and, as you say, didn't follow through; sooner or later, I gave up. Not exactly a diet, but a healthy diet and a much-needed sleep discipline, because I had apnea, which seems to be the cause of some heart problems (arrhythmias). I am over 71 years old, and, as you say, time is becoming increasingly valuable. Therefore, I spend my nights trying to gain more time, although I know it is an illusion. Too much about me, this post is about you.

I am amazed by your perseverance and discipline; I have never met anyone like you. I think you will succeed in everything you set out to do, but I wonder, because you have to give up so much, is it worth it? I'm asking myself, not you. You know where you want to go, and if you get there, the answer is simple. It was worth it.

Hello @bluemoon, thanks for reading my post till the end. Yeah, the idiot thing was a joke and also a test to see who's reading my post till the end so you made it till the end.

I am amazed by your perseverance and discipline; I have never met anyone like you.

Thanks for the nice compliment, but I'm just like anyone else and there's plenty of room for improvement. Unfortunately I have tried many times, have failed many times, but I refuse to give up. The only choice I have is to continue and succeed.

I think you will succeed in everything you set out to do, but I wonder, because you have to give up so much, is it worth it?

If is succeed, then yes, it worth it. If I don't succeed, then it has been a huge waste of time, this is why I have to take it seriously. Other have done it, so why can't I?

I understand you are cutting sleep time to gain more time, but I don't think it's a good idea as it can backfire easily. There should be a healthy balance between sleep tine and time spent awake.

Anyway, thanks for the nice comment and wishing you Happy Easter! Enjoy the holidays with your family and loved ones!

I like to go until the end, it is a perseverance that you recommend. If I don't read to the end, I don't even comment... I've read many comments that amused me and proved to me that those didn't read to the end or not at all.

I have an expectation that you will succeed and I am aware that if you succeed it will be something really important, maybe life changing.

I'm glad I can wish you a Happy Easter and a peaceful, and joyful holiday!

Sounds like a great plan to me. All of the food looks fresh and delicious. I agree with you on the sleep. It is so important to get good quality sleep and in the right amounts, too.

Thanks Tamara! I'm cooking my own food to be able to eat healthy and also work out my sleeping issues. Happy Easter!

When I saw Bluemoon's comment saying I'm an idiot, I was confused. I didn't know why he was saying that. Then I read your post until the end and arrived at that part

(you're an idiot 😆)

🤣

So, I am one too hahahaha. Well, I am not, as it was great to read you, and indeed, health should be one of the priorities we have. As with many things in life, discipline plays a huge role in achieving it. Oh, I saw the recipe for grízes tészta!!! It has been ages since I made it. Thank you, it will find its place on our table one day next week :))

Yeah, that is a joke and I'm dropping it after long posts like this 😂

Yes, we agree on discipline, that's the keyword and the most important ingredient to success.

So you stole my recipe 🤣. I'm glad though and hope to see a post about the grízes tészta!!! Can't wait 😎

Grízes tészta post hahaha, we will see, maybe I can't properly prepare the dish 😂

Welcome to the family of idiots, @mipiano!
Lucky we're the good idiots, because we read to the end.
Have a happy Easter with your loved ones!

Hahaha, yes, but good ones indeed 😁

Thank, Happy Easter to you too @bluemoon ☺️
Look, the orchid bloomed

1000021983.jpg

Beautiful! It will delight you with its bloom for a long time to come. I have a similar one, only it has more white.

This is my only orchid survivor 😁 A beautiful white one, with small flowers, left this world 🤐

Sorry about the white one. I like orchids with small flowers.

I was counting days (of course, on my fingers 😂) and it looks like you are almost exactly 100 days off with your NY resolutions... 😛 As you don't like them, we can call them Spring resolutions! 😃

Jokes aside, while reading your post, I identified very much with most things... The curse of self-employed people is most of the things that you listed... Lack of sleep, walking, exercise, and healthy living in general... Somehow, it looks like being employed in a company from 9-17 is much better as it's "pushed" on people and you don't have too much to think about... You HAVE TO organize yourself to fit in "the schedule"...

On the other side, being self-employed almost all my life, I would never give up the freedoms I get by living it! The key to the right balance is exactly what you said: discipline, consistency, and creating good habits! The harder part is to implement those things and LIVE by them! 😃

All the best!

PS. You will probably like the new app that @tibfox is building as it could help you... Check his post about pocket goals...

No resolution, will never use that word and I hate it!!! 😆 This is a plan. One that I'm intending to follow through.

I think both types of life, 9 to 5 job and self employed have their advantages and disadvantages. The difference is, as self employed, you know who you are sacrifices what you're sacrifices. Some working a 9 to 5 job are in our situation and all they do is working to make someone else's dream come true.

discipline, consistency, and creating good habits!

This says it all. Stick to the plan and you'll be fine, this is what I always say. To myself too 😆

Thanks for the recommendation and Happy Easter!

you're an idiot 😆

Hey! I'm offended lol

Health is the key to everything else. Counting calories is the key. I used to work with some people that ran one of the biggest fitness chains in the US. The health club chain had all kinds of equipment and classes, juice bars, sold vitamins and supplements, had personal trainers, pools, saunas, tennis courts, basketball gyms, everything they could think of to sell you. But they all said at the end of the day it was simple math. Calories in vs Calories out. How much you ate vs how many calories you burned. And nothing else could change the math.

But they all said at the end of the day it was simple math. Calories in vs Calories out. How much you ate vs how many calories you burned. And nothing else could change the math.

Gyms and workouts are good, but many people think going to the gym would solve their problem. We all know that's a very lucrative business, because it is selling a dream to so many lazy people. There are some, who understand what working out means and doing it correctly, but without a proper diet, nothing is going to be achieved.

Happy Easter!

Health should be number one priority for sure. I tend to focus more on exercise, for me it helps a ton with overall mood, especially dancing. If you're short on time, take a look at HIIT. 15 minutes 3 times a week can make wonders! All the best for this new chapter, whatever it is!

Yes, exercising is good and should be part of any routine. I'm glad you are able to have those sessions each week.

I don’t also have a new years resolution because of the same reason of failing to follow it. But I would now somehow strive to change some habits. Slowly but surely.

For me having weekly, monthly plans and follow through is easier than a new year resolution.

I sometimes follow the Whole 30 diet. The main thing is that no baked goods, no flour and no sugar. It's like the name says for 30 days. I always lose about 3 to 5 kg.

That's great. I think we all have to find the type of diet that works for us.
