Hello plant-based foodies, wherever you are in the world and/or galaxy!

Here @sirenahippie

There is often confusion between the terms VEGANISM and VEGETARIANISM. Perhaps due to phonetic association, perhaps because they are similar, some people may confuse these two eating styles, which, beyond that, are lifestyles.

image.png

In VEGANISM, as we have mentioned in other posts, from a gastronomic perspective, only the consumption of foods of plant origin is permitted, completely excluding any products derived from animals. Thus, meats (beef, lamb, pork, chicken, goat, etc.), mollusks, seafood, eggs, milk, curd, cream, whey, butter, honey, among others, are excluded from the vegan diet; however, in a diet framed within VEGATARIANISM, some of these products may be included.

The inclusion of animal products in a vegetarian diet varies depending on the type of VEGETARIANISM practiced. Therefore, some types include dairy products, others only allow eggs, and so on. Based on the above, we outline the existing vegetarian eating styles below:

VEGETARIAN EATING STYLES

  • FLEXIVEGETARIAN: It is a semi-vegetarian style that prioritizes the consumption of fruits and vegetables, but occasionally includes some meat, especially fish, as well as other animal products.

  • PESCETARIAN: Combine fruits and vegetables, with the consumption of fish and seafood (thanks @carolynstahl)

  • OVOLACTOVEGETARIAN: It does not include any type of meat, fish, seafood, molluscs or honey, but it does include eggs, milk and dairy products.

  • OVOVEGETARIAN: Eggs and honey are permitted. No meat, fish, shellfish, or mussels are permitted.

  • LACTOVEGETARIAN: It does not include any type of meat, fish, seafood, mollusks, but it does include milk, dairy products, and honey.

  • APIVEGETARIAN: Only honey is permitted; other animal products are not accepted.

From the above, we can deduce that diets based on VEGETARIANISM are flexible with regard to the consumption of animal products, while in VEGANISM only plant-based products are allowed. If you are not yet vegan, we invite you to experiment with some of these VEGETARIANISM styles. We also remind you that this community, Plant Power (Vegan), is 100% vegan

I was pescatarian for a while and that included everything except meat and poultry. It was the easiest way to avoid social pressures. Then I stopped eating eggs and dairy and continued with the fish and seafood. Then I just stopped fish and seafood. It was the transition that was easiest for me.

That was a style we missed including in this post. I'll edit it to add it. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Without a doubt, a gradual transition is the best way to become vegan.

It's good to see you again. Hugs!
