My wife asked me "If you could choose anything for diner, what would you choose?"
Wow, what a question for a husband to hear!! I said "Jimmy Johns", it's a sandwich shop that makes really delicious subs.
But then I added: "But not from the store, we're going to buy day old bread from Jimmy Johns, then go to the grocery store and buy the other ingredients."
We've been trying to imitate various restaurant food at home, since it's extremely expensive for a family of 9 to "eat out" or get "take out". The blessing of being home (and having a grocery store very close) we can make impromptu visits for ingredients and make our own restaurant food.
We executed our plan quickly. We visited Jimmy John's and bought 16" loafs of day old bread for $0.50 each. They were baked that morning and were not stale at all.
We then visited the grocery store and found discounted roast beef lunch meat. We also found turkey discounted and a large bag of chips. All done, all the ingredients (including the bread) came to under $20.
We cut the loafs in thirds and made sandwiches with roast beef and turkey, lettuce and tomatoes. We added pickles and I added some peppers I found in the fridge. We added mayonnaise and mustard. My wife wrapped them up with the JJ paper and labeled them with marker.
Looked and tasted like the REAL Bootlegger Club from Jimmy John's!
Just for fun, I made an online order, the same as what we made, with chips and same accessories. Seven Bootlegger sandwiches from Jimmy Johns with a bag of chips came to close to $86
Our home-made version, for all the subs and chips, came to under $20.00. We may not be able to afford a "Let's get Jimmy Johns" on an average evening, but if we make the time to visit some stores (less than 20 minutes) and make some subs (another 20 minutes), we can hold on to $65 and the whole family can still enjoy Jimmy John's subs!
The saying is "A penny saved is a penny earned." More like "A penny saved is a penny saved." But I still sort of feel like I "earned" about $65 in the savings jar, while the entire family enjoys the luxury of expensive subs for diner.
I feel a little like a bootlegger myself!
Have you ever had an experience like this? Making expensive food on the cheap?

Bless the Most High!
Teach Your Children Liberty from Sin
We encourage parents to teach their children principles of Godliness, beginning with the Word and an understanding who God is and what His Son has done to form a relationship with us.
No one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13
Teach Your children Liberty from Tyranny
Second to this is the principle of self-determination and freedom, lest we loose the ability to teach our children the first principle in future generations.
Our children read the Tuttle Twin books, specifically to learn libertarian principles, which most people learn later in life. These books are useful for our family, and yours, to teach children concepts that seem complicated, but are made simple in these books.
I am an affiliate for Libertas Publishing, your purchase will help our family grow financially.
