Maple and Clove: Canberra, AUSTRALIA

On a crisp chilly winter day, my wife and I were looking for a place to eat that was warm and nearby before we had to run off to pick up our kids from school.

I had been to this Maple and Clove cafe/restaurant for the first time only a couple of weeks beforehand but had only had a coffee, and so I suggested it as a place that might be interesting to try out as a lunch place as well!

The Space

The place is pretty modern looking... and there were outdoor seating areas, but like I said, it was a pretty crisp winter afternoon... and so, we opted for the indoor seating!

A touch of green... I'm not really sure it does more than a sort of tokenistic nature sort of thing... but there are a lot of places that try it on...

... and an open kitchen! Also a common trendy sort of thing...

The Menu

Some really interesting looking things on the menu... it is a touch on the expensive side, but I guess that is the part of town that we are in... lots of government public servants and politicians... I am guess that they probably just expense everything!

I did get a coffee this time, but next time, I think will try out the juices or smoothies... they do look pretty nice!

The Food

My wife picked up the sweet potato hash brown... and wow, it was a pretty impressive stack there! A very unusual way to serve it, but the hash brown is at the bottom, and the scrambled eggs are stacked on top!

Meanwhile, I had gotten the steak sandwich... and wow, this was some pretty good food right there! However, it was quite rich and filling... and I did find that I didn't really need much to eat until much later into the evening, and even then... I still felt full!

The Experience

Really great food, albeit a little bit expensive... but it does seem to be only place in close proximity to the area that we were in... it would be a roughly ten minute walk to the nearest cafe area... and we just didn't want to go that far on this particular day.

Staff were really nice and the place is perfect for just sitting down and killing time... quiet and relaxed... in fact, I mind find myself coming back here more often to kill time!
