What would you do to stay alive and what would you do to keep your family alive?
Would you harm another person? Would you do something out of character or of an extremely difficult nature? Would you eat a rabbit? I'm not asking for an answer here, just posing the questions so that whomever reads this may think a little on the subject because in the world to come some pre-preparation could be advantageous.
So, let's just say you want to survive and want to keep your family alive but you're in a dire situation from a food perspective for whatever reason...you're going to starve to death - a terrible way to go - and along hops a rabbit and (lets assume) you have the skills required to catch/trap/snare it and actually have the skills to skin and dress it for cooking...Here's a recipe I have made myself in the field and one which I'd suggest is a legitimate meal for someone in the above situation.
Ingredients
- 1 rabbit dressed and disjointed
- 1/3 cup oil (any will do if in a tight spot - just not motor oil for obvious reasons)
- 2 cups of water
- 4 cups of raw vegetables cut up (whatever you have on hand)
- 1 teaspoon of salt and same of pepper (plus a little more)
- 1/4 cup of flour (any will do)
Method
Combine the flour, salt and pepper and roll the rabbit in it to coat then brown off the rabbit in a heated pan. Add water and cover to cook on a low heat for about one hour or until the rabbit is reasonably tender. Add the vegetables (you can add a little more water if required), some additional salt and pepper to taste and continue to cook for about twenty minutes or so - it's cooked when the vegetables are cooked to your personal liking.
It's pretty simple to make and pretty simple food generally but it'll certainly keep you alive. One can add different vegetables if available but I like potatoes, carrots, peas, onion and green beans. It makes no difference what you use though and whatever you have to hand is good enough. Variations are possible such as adding a few squirts of sweet chili sauce, a soup stock cube or even concentrated tomato paste...it's your rabbit stew so make it up as you go.
I know eating rabbits isn't what most people would like to do and in truth I'm one of those people...however as I've said in other posts of mine sometimes survival has to take priority over one's preferences and choices.
Rabbit is a legitimate food and has been for a long time and in many cultures and countries including here in Australia - it's even still available in supermarkets here. A word of caution though, some rabbits can carry diseases and it'd be unadvisable to eat those ones so if hunting/trapping/snaring them for yourself make sure you're selective.
I've not had to use this recipe or eat a rabbit for a survival reason but I have the skills to do so. Sure, I may never use it or may not have a convenient stash of vegetables, flour, salt and pepper at the moment in which I do need to cook a rabbit to survive but the skill is transferrable and adaptable and I'd rather have the skill, and made sure it works, than not.
What about you? Would you eat a rabbit or some other non-conventional food to stay alive or would you prefer to starve to death? Remember, you're dead for a long time before you answer. Have you ever been hungry enough to consider eating something you'd usually turn away from? Do you have any rabbit recipes you'd like to share? Feel free to do so.
Note: Yes, I am fully aware that the image is not a rabbit - I just didn't have any rabbit images of my own and refuse to use stock images.
