Happy New Year to everyone in the Liketu community! Today I would like to share a little bit about the Japanese New Year. In Japan, it has long been customary to eat mochi (rice cakes) during the New Year. I love mochi! I also love to watch the process of making it.
For the past several years, my parents have started making mochi by machine. My father's role is to wash the glutinous rice the day before, my mother's role is to turn the glutinous rice into rice cakes the next day, and my role is to cut the cold rice cakes into squares at night using a rice cake cutter. Needless to say, the hardest part is my mother's.
This year I took pictures of the process of making rice cakes. My mother is working on the machine. After the rice cakes are pounded, my mother rounds them, stretches them like boards, and dresses them with red bean paste (my mother's hands are still mysteriously strong against heat). Five or six board-shaped rice cakes like the first picture were made, which I cut with a rice cake cutter at night.
I couldn't hold the phone myself because my hands would turn white from the rice cake powder, so I left it to my oldest son to take pictures...but he didn't press the save button and I didn't get a single picture 😂I'm sorry I can't show you how the cut looks.
The next day, my father handed out rice cakes to the neighbors as if he had made them himself. This is the usual flow of rice cake pounding in my parents' house.

私はお餅が大好きです!去年もこの時期、餅の写真やら餅つきの動画やらを投稿した記憶がありますが、今年もUPしたいと思います。
ここ数年、実家は機械でお餅をつくようになりました。前日にもち米を研ぐのが父の役割、翌日にそのもち米を餅にするまでが母、そして夜、冷えた餅を餅切機で四角くカットするのが私の役割となっています。言うまでもなく、一番大変なのは母のパートですが。
今年は餅つき機にもち米を入れるところから写真を撮ってみました。作業をしているのは母です。つきあがった餅は、母が鏡餅にしたり、伸ばしたり、あんころ餅にしたりしていきます(相変わらず謎に熱に強い母の手)。一枚目の写真のような板状の餅が5~6枚出来上がり、それを夜、私が餅切機でカットしました。
餅とり粉で手が真っ白になってしまうため自分ではスマホを持てず、撮影を長男に任せたのですが・・・保存ボタンを押さなかったらしく、一枚も撮れていませんでした😂カットの様子(私の勇姿)をお見せできないのが残念です。
そして、翌日父が「さも自分がついたかのような顔で近所に餅を配る」までが、実家の餅つきの一連の流れとなっております。
